Don’t Be Afraid of Light-Colored Fabrics in Your Home!

We’re here to turn a bit of “common knowledge” on its head. Anyone who has pets or children tends to avoid light fabrics on their upholstery out of fear of inevitable spills and messes. Stop envying your polished friends with their perfectly white and beige sofas and chairs, and start introducing those shades back into your home TODAY!

There are a few tricks to keeping those fabrics bright, and it starts with the type of fabric you’re covering your furniture with. At The Kellogg Collection, we carry beautiful kid- and pet-friendly fabrics by Sunbrella and Crypton. Crypton’s patented fabric is the only textile that is stain, water and bacteria resistant. The key to this super fabric is its weaving process coupled with its proven barrier. Many Crypton fabrics are so soft, you won’t be able to tell it’s a special fabric that is stain resistant to markers, wine, odors and more.

Another line of durable fabric we love is Sunbrella, which began in the 1960s as an umbrella and awning manufacturer/designer. This company has since expanded to include lines of fabric for upholstering furniture for indoor and outdoor use. Sunbrella fabrics are engineered with robust performance characteristics that provide resistance to fading and degradation from sunlight and chemical exposure. The fabric is tactile yet durable, has industry-leading environmental characteristics, is easy to care for and offers long life – wherever it’s used. Sunbrella is easy to clean and care for, and we often see it used on outdoor as well as indoor furniture.

For added protection, you could also spray your furniture with Scotchguard or any of the other fabric sprays on the market today.

Now that you know you can have lighter shades in your living room, let’s move on to why. Think about your favorite white or nude dress. It’s easy to brighten it up for spring with a coral scarf and sandals, or dress it up for fall and winter with a black jacket and boots. The same goes with light, neutral furniture. It’s easy to match pillows, throws, and artwork with a neutral fabric all year round. This versatility makes it easy to commit to upholstering (or re-upholstering) a sofa in a more neutral shade compared to a bold pattern or other color.
