Upholstery: It’s All In The Details!

A little while ago, we wrote about upholstery and fabrics at The Kellogg Collection. This post will go a little more in-depth with extra special details that will make your piece of upholstery truly unique, whether it’s with nailhead trim, a banded skirt, or the coveted “four way match” fabric application.

Nailhead trim is one way to add a very polished finish to an upholstered piece. Variables like the size of your nailheads, the finish, and how you’d like them spaced will help you achieve the look you are going for.

Nailhead Trim

A contrast welt is another method for trimming a piece of upholstery. This look features a thin line of contrasting fabric instead of the usual self welt, that makes the piece appear as if it’s been outlined or traced. It is one way to really highlight the shape of an upholstery frame.

Another element to think about for your upholstery is the “skirt” along the bottom. Would you like a kick pleat or a waterfall? What about a decorative band along the bottom? Our talented team is always available to talk through the different options with you.

Tufted upholstery is a luxurious-looking touch to a piece of upholstery. This effect is created when upholstered buttons are pulled deep into the back of a sofa, chair, or other piece of upholstery creating tufts.

One final, very important thing to remember – should you pick out a large pattern for your upholstery – is to look for a “four way match.” You want the fabric on the skirt to line up with the arms, the seat cushion, etc. It’s a level of detail that’s easy to take for granted, but a four way match on a pattern with a large repeat is a sign of high quality workmanship.

Four way match – the stripes flow through the two pleats and up into the seat cushion.

We hope this piece gives you a lot to think about as you decide on a look for your next piece of upholstery! Feel free to come in to one of our four shops and ask us questions about these and more upholstery customization options.

The Benefits of Beautiful Botanicals

The first day of spring isn’t until March 20, and it’s going to be pretty chilly until then. You can’t rush mother nature to bring beautiful florals and greenery into your home, so what can you do?

Here’s our secret: For flowers that look beautiful year-round, cheat a little with our faux botanicals! Buy your favorite flowers, like orchids or hydrangeas, then set them in a fetching vase or pot and never worry about it again. Botanicals don’t need water or sunlight, so they’ll “thrive” in any corner of your home. They don’t attract pests, and won’t affect anyone in your home with pollen allergies. Our artificial botanicals are the most beautiful and lifelike plants you can buy, so don’t be surprised if your house sitter waters them for you when you leave town!

There are two basic styles of botanicals we carry. One is in a potted plant style, such as our orchids, which we recommend you display as-is. The other style is done in sprigs so you can arrange several stems of leaves and flowers to achieve a look as voluminous as your heart desires. Either will give your home a healthier, more lush feel for guests and pets alike.

This is not meant to mean that we don’t love a real plant, too. Real plants aid in room humidity and can add a small boost of oxygen. So those of you blessed with green thumbs – our pots and vases are ideal for your real plants, too!

The Kellogg Collection’s Baltimore Shop Celebrates 30 Years!

Debbie, Lesley, Baltimore manager Ashley, Diane, and Kathy.

Debbie Schmidt, Leslie Rodgers, Baltimore manager Ashley Dickinson, Diane Litz, and Kathy Hutson.

Kellogg BaltimoreIt’s been 30 years since our founder, Pam Kellogg Green, signed the lease on the Baltimore location of The Kellogg Collection. It was the second store the Baltimore native opened following the success of her original Washington, D.C. store.

“Opening a Baltimore store made sense for a lot of reasons,” said Green. “It’s easy to get to from D.C., and it was a great excuse to come back more often to see family.”

Kellogg Baltimore

Green grew up in Ruxton and attended Roland Park Country School. Though the store attracts customers she grew up with, news of its one-of-a-kind pieces of English furniture, designer upholstery, chandeliers and Dhurrie rugs has spread beyond her hometown. Today, the Baltimore store attracts buyers from Annapolis, Chevy Chase, Philadelphia, Southern Pennsylvania and Hollywood – about once a year, award winning set designer Tiffany Zappulla shops the store for T.V. shows like House of Cards and Veep.

Kellogg Baltimore

Today, The Kellogg Collection has stores in Richmond and McLean, Virginia, and a warehouse in Gaithersburg in addition to its stores in D.C. and Baltimore. Green believes what really sets Baltimore customers apart from the others is their sense of tradition. “A lot of the people who live in Baltimore grow up here. It’s not as transient as D.C.,” said Green, “so we often see people buying pieces to go with their heirlooms.”

Kellogg Baltimore

“While The Kellogg Collection still sees customers who started shopping with us when we opened 30 years ago, I find we are now helping the children of those same customers, and their children,” said Diane Litz, the store’s resident interior designer for 18 years. “It’s a pretty place to work and I love the women I work with.”

Kellogg Baltimore

Those who have seen the store blossom since it first opened nearly 30 years ago know that it hasn’t always been located at 6421 Falls Road. Its first location was about two miles up the road at Green Spring Station. A few years later, The Kellogg Collection called Owings Mills Mall home, along with anchor store Saks Fifth Avenue, before finally settling in to its location today. Now, the Baltimore location counts Urban Threads (across the street), Leesha Lee and Cox Kitchen & Bath among its neighbors.

The Kellogg Collection looks forward to many more years of serving the Baltimore community.

Local Profile: Barry Remley, Owner of Salvations Architectural Furnishings

Sofa

Barry Remley, owner and designer of the Maryland-based company Salvations Architectural Furnishings, is an extremely talented woman whose company has been in business for over 25 years. She creates very sleek, simple and classic looking furniture, and many pieces are made out of recycled and salvaged materials. She has given me the pleasure of learning about some of her inspirations, motivations and interesting projects.

Remley started her business in 1985 when her husband was seeking furniture for his office that didn’t look like typical office furniture. Inspired by her findings at friend Donetta George’s shop The Brass Knob, Remley and former business partner Jo Coveny set out on their project to design furniture for the office. From there, the two decided to start a business together.

The company got its name, “Salvations,” from the concept of giving new life to found pieces that were no longer able to serve their original functions. Remley said of this, “It was a time when antique architecturals were not as valued as they are today. We loved the historic interest and beautiful craftsmanship found in the old antique grates and random pieces we found, and wanted to make furniture out of them.” One of the company’s very first coffee tables was made from an old grille found in an alley behind Remley’s DC home!

For over ten years, the company was run out of a basement studio in Remley’s house. After about a year into the business, Remley’s partner, Jo Coveny, left to be a designer at The Kellogg Collection. Upon Coveny’s departure, Remley took steps to learn the process of design, including taking drawing classes at Mount Vernon College. From early on, everything she did for her company was by trial and error. In the beginning it was about putting one foot in front of the other and staying in business until the next coffee table was finished.

Eventually running a growing business out of her house became too much, and just when she was ready to move into a larger space the right one came along. Taking this step has helped her grow the company – and thanks to a combination of luck and hard work, she has been in business for almost 30 years. And now with her son working with her, she is hoping to be in business for many, many more.

SAL09-II-BB

Remley, having grown up in a family of creative people, has found inspiration all around her. From nature to travel and architecture, she seeks inspiration in all forms. A lover of rocks and stones, she says that many of the paint finishes in her designs have been inspired by color in rocks that she has collected and brought home from different parts of the world.

Antiques – namely, antique furnishings – are also an inspiration in her work. Remley has always appreciated the simplicity of clean lines, wanting her designs to “feel rooted in the past” and “timeless.”  Her designs are just that. What makes her product so special is that her designs look beautiful in a wide spectrum of interiors, from the very traditional to the contemporary. In working with the same blacksmiths for most of her years in business, Remley claims that the team spirit and shared love of what they do shows in every piece they produce.

One of Remley’s favorite accomplishments is that Salvations tables and accessories are featured in American embassy residences in over 70 worldwide locations. In fact, some of her table names, such as Budapest, Lima and Nepal, were chosen because they were designed for the American embassies in those locations.

sal18cc-hg-detail

One of the greatest parts of Remley’s line is that every piece is made locally. She finds that many of her buyers are interested in supporting local artisans; in that, it is much easier to customize tables as opposed to manufacturing her products overseas.

Remley has had a hand in every step of the production process. She works day and night and there is no doubt that she is talented at what she does: “I think in some way I sort of followed an unconscious path for a while. I was having fun and still am. I absolutely love what I do; I love the creative process, I love talking to the clients. I am grateful to work with so many creative designers. And loving what I do every day keeps me going.”
